Children's Book Ideas?

I will be the "mystery reader" for my daughter's third-grade class on Friday. I need to pick a book. I'm leaning strongly toward Neil Gaiman's The Wolves in the Walls, but I could face angry phone calls from parents whose children experienced horrible nightmares following my visit. Do you have any picture book recommendations for the third-grade crowd (8 yrs)?

Ideally the book will be not so well-known. I won't react well to the know-it-all heckler in the back of the room who constantly tells the class "I know this book. I know what happens."
